Hema Malini Accepts Padma Vibhushan For Dharmendra

President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Padma Vibhushan on Dharmendra for his work in the field of art. The award is India’s second-highest civilian honour.

The Republic Day list had announced 131 Padma awards. These included five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awards.

At this investiture ceremony, 66 awardees received their honours. The group included two Padma Vibhushan recipients, six Padma Bhushan recipients, and 58 Padma Shri recipients.

The remaining awardees will receive their medals in the next round. That staggered format has become common because the list spans so many fields and regions.

Cinema’s place in national awards

The Padma honours tell us something about how India remembers cinema. Box office numbers fade first. Songs stay longer. Characters stay longest.

Dharmendra’s career sits firmly in that last category. He was part of an era when Hindi films built national conversation without social media, teaser drops, or fan clubs with digital war rooms.

Kerala also had a strong presence in this year’s honours. Among the Padma Vibhushan awardees were names linked to the state, including V.S. Achuthanandan, Justice K.T. Thomas, and P. Narayanan.

Mammootty and Vellappally Natesan were among those named for the Padma Bhushan. The spread shows how these awards move across politics, law, cinema, social work, and public life.

For ordinary viewers, though, the memory of the day may remain simpler. Hema Malini stepping forward. Ahana Deol in tears. A nation pausing to honour a man whose films sat inside countless Indian homes.

The Padma Vibhushan will now become part of Dharmendra’s official legacy. But his real legacy was written much earlier, in crowded theatres, family TV nights, and lines people still repeat without checking which film they came from. That is the strange power of cinema.
