Set the alarm, keep the chai strong, and warn the family about the TV volume. This FIFA World Cup 2026 night is built for Indian football fans who like their sleep optional.

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe headline the card, but the stakes run deeper than star power. Argentina face Austria at 10:30 pm IST in Dallas, while France meet Iraq at 2:30 am in Philadelphia.

Then comes Norway versus Senegal at 5:30 am, followed by Jordan against Algeria at 8:30 am. By breakfast, Groups I and J may look very different.

Messi carries Argentina again

Argentina arrive as defending champions, but that old title does not win fresh points. Their opening 3-0 win over Algeria gave them a clean start, and Messi scored all 3 goals.

That hat-trick did two things. It put Argentina on top early, and it reminded everyone that Messi still bends tournaments around himself.

Austria also started well. They beat Jordan 3-1, which means this is not a soft second match for Argentina.

The history between these teams is thin. Argentina beat Austria 5-1 in a 1980 friendly, while their 1990 meeting ended 1-1. That tells us little about this match, but it adds a nice old-world flavour.

Argentina will again lean on Emiliano Martinez, Cristian Romero, Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez. Their midfield has enough bite and craft to control the rhythm.

Austria will ask David Alaba and Marcel Sabitzer to carry the big moments. Marko Arnautovic gives them presence up front, especially if Argentina leave space.

The real question is simple. Can Austria stop Argentina from turning possession into Messi moments?

France cannot treat Iraq lightly

France began with a 3-1 win over Senegal, which is a fine result in any World Cup. They now face Iraq, who lost 1-4 to Norway in their opener.

On paper, France have the cleaner path. In real life, World Cup group games rarely respect paper.

This is also the first international meeting between France and Iraq. That matters because there is no shared match memory, no old pattern, and no emotional baggage.

Mbappe remains the obvious danger. He gives France speed, goals and fear in equal measure. Even defenders who hold shape well start dropping 2 extra steps against him.

France also have Mike Maignan in goal, plus Jules Kounde, William Saliba, Theo Hernandez, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele. That is a side with options in every line.

Iraq will need Aymen Hussein to make counters count. Against stronger teams, one break can change the mood of the whole match.

For Iraq, the task is not only to survive. They must find a way to make France uncomfortable for long spells.

Haaland tests Senegal’s nerve

Erling Haaland has already made his noise. Norway beat Iraq 4-1, and Haaland scored a hat-trick.

That is the kind of start that changes how every opponent prepares. Senegal know they cannot give him service, space or second chances.

Norway also have Martin Odegaard, which makes the puzzle harder. Haaland attacks the box, and Odegaard sees passes before others notice danger.

Senegal lost 1-3 to France, but they still have enough quality to hurt Norway. Sadio Mane, Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr can stretch any defence.

At the back, Senegal need Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly to bring calm. If they panic, Norway will punish them quickly.

The only earlier meeting between Norway and Senegal came in a friendly, and Senegal won it. That little stat will not decide this game, but dressing rooms enjoy such reminders.

For Indian viewers, this one may feel familiar because of Premier League names. Yet World Cup pressure changes the temperature. Club form helps, but national shirts weigh differently.

Jordan and Algeria chase survival

Jordan and Algeria enter their match with no cushion. Jordan lost 1-3 to Austria, while Algeria fell 0-3 against Argentina.

That makes this the most anxious game of the slate. A win brings air. Another defeat leaves the table looking very cruel.

Their history goes back across 3 matches. Algeria won 6-0 in 1974, Jordan replied with a 2-1 win in 1988, and the 2004 match ended 1-1.

This will be their first World Cup meeting. It also carries the flavour of an Arab derby on the sport’s biggest stage.

Jordan will look to Musa Tamari and Ali Olwan for spark. They need speed, direct running and a finish when the chance comes.

Algeria will turn to Riyad Mahrez and Amin Gouiri. Mahrez, in particular, still has the left foot to unlock tense games.

The expanded 48-team format gives some third-placed sides a possible route forward. That keeps hope alive, but it also makes goal difference precious.

So neither side can afford a loose final 20 minutes. One late goal could change not only the match, but the group’s entire calculation.

The table starts talking

The second round of group matches usually tells the truth. First games show nerves. Second games show structure, fitness and coaching clarity.

Argentina want control, France want authority, Norway want momentum, and Senegal need a response. Jordan and Algeria need something more basic, belief.

For fans in India, this is the sweet pain of World Cup football. You lose sleep, check the table at odd hours, and pretend the morning meeting will be fine.

But beyond the stars, these games are about pressure. One pass, one save, one missed run can decide a month’s work. By the time India wakes up, reputations may have shifted, and the knockout race may already have picked its first favourites.
